Kristi Noem FIRED From Homeland Security Role

President Donald Trump announced Thursday the replacement of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, marking the first Cabinet departure of his second term. Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma will assume the role effective March 31, 2026, while Noem transitions to Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas, a new Western Hemisphere security initiative.

Cabinet Shakeup Following Capitol Hill Confrontation

The announcement came just two days after Noem faced intense questioning on Capitol Hill from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Trump revealed the decision on Truth Social, praising Noem for delivering what he called the most secure border in American history while simultaneously introducing Mullin as her replacement. The Wall Street Journal first reported the planned personnel change before Trump’s official statement.

Trump characterized Noem’s tenure as successful, highlighting border security achievements and thanking her for her service. Noem will now focus on dismantling drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere through coordination with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She claimed DHS accomplished historic results during her 13-month leadership, including the departure of 3 million illegal aliens and locating 145,000 children.

MMA Fighter Turned Senator Takes Helm

Mullin brings a unique background to the position, combining ten years in the House of Representatives with three years in the Senate. Trump emphasized Mullin’s status as the only Native American senator and his previous career as an undefeated professional MMA fighter. The president described him as a warrior who understands the courage required to advance the America First agenda.

Speaking after the announcement, Mullin acknowledged uncertainty about his nomination timeline but expressed enthusiasm about working closely with the White House. Trump tasked him with maintaining border security, stopping migrant crime, and ending illegal drug trafficking. The transition occurs as DHS faces continued scrutiny over immigration enforcement methods.

Controversial Tenure Ends With Reassignment

Noem’s departure follows a turbulent period overseeing Trump’s immigration crackdown. Her tenure faced particular criticism after the shooting deaths of two protesters in Minneapolis by immigration enforcement officers. Congressional Republicans and Democrats both questioned her department’s handling of billions in allocated funding. Despite the controversies, Trump framed the move as a promotion, positioning Noem to address cartel activity threatening American families through drug trafficking in the Western Hemisphere.
