Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation Monday authorizing Palm Beach International Airport to bear President Donald Trump’s name, while Trump separately unveiled plans for a towering presidential library in downtown Miami valued at over $67 million.
Airport Renaming Takes Effect in July
The bill signing clears the way for Palm Beach International Airport to become President Donald J. Trump International Airport starting in July. The facility serves the area surrounding Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, where he frequently travels. The renaming comes after Palm Beach officials recently designated the road connecting the airport to Trump’s residence as Donald J. Trump Boulevard. DeSantis’s approval completes the legislative process that began in the Florida statehouse earlier this year.
Presidential Library Plans Revealed
Hours after the airport bill signing, Trump released a dramatic video on social media showcasing digital renderings of his planned presidential library. The designs feature a distinctive tower along Miami’s skyline with Trump’s signature gold lettering. Interior shots display a presidential jet in the lobby, a gold escalator reminiscent of his 2016 campaign launch, a replica Oval Office, rooftop gardens, and a large gold statue of the president. Miami-based architecture firm Bermello Ajamil created the designs.
Controversy Over Public Land Gift
Miami Dade College donated nearly three acres of downtown property for the library site, valued at more than $67 million. A lawsuit challenging the gift on grounds of insufficient public notice was dismissed by a judge in December. Eric Trump previously stated the library would become an icon on Miami’s skyline and one of the most beautiful buildings ever constructed. The project website currently displays a coming soon message with a donation link, though the White House has not provided additional details about construction timelines or funding.
Broader Naming Push Continues
The airport renaming represents part of a larger effort to attach Trump’s name to American institutions since his return to the White House. Recent initiatives include proposals to add his name to the United States Institute of Peace, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and United States currency. The Kennedy Center naming generated significant backlash, with a Democratic lawmaker filing a legal challenge and the venue canceling a Christmas Eve jazz concert in response to the change.
