Representative Shri Thanedar is advancing federal reparations legislation as he faces a primary challenge from his left, backing a proposal to transfer $14 trillion to descendants of enslaved Americans despite Republican opposition and Democratic concerns about political viability.
Progressive Lawmaker Doubles Down on Reparations
Thanedar told Fox News Digital that the federal government’s historical treatment of Black Americans remains shameful. The Michigan Democrat emphasized that formerly enslaved families received broken promises of land meant to secure their freedom and economic independence. He argues these broken promises continue to create devastating economic effects today. Thanedar’s office did not explain how the massive wealth transfer would work in practice or who would qualify for the payments under the proposed system.

Primary Challenge Looms Large
The reparations push comes as Thanedar confronts a serious primary challenge in Michigan’s August 2026 election. State Representative Donavan McKinney earned backing from Senator Bernie Sanders and the progressive Justice Democrats organization despite Thanedar’s own progressive credentials. The two-term congressman’s support for Israel alienated him from the furthest-left faction of his party, including fellow Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib. Thanedar left the Democratic Socialists of America after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, creating a rift with progressive activists in his deep-blue district.
Massive Wealth Transfer Proposal
The Indian American congressman serves as an original cosponsor of H.R. 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act. He also backs expansive legislation originally introduced by Representative Cori Bush in 2023 that aims to transfer $14 trillion in estimated losses to reparations recipients. Republicans oppose reparations over concerns about determining eligibility and their position that current Americans should not bear responsibility for harms committed generations ago. Progressive Democrats supporting reparations have encountered resistance from moderate party members who view the policy as politically toxic with voters.
Long-Standing Policy Position
Thanedar supported slavery reparations before entering Congress. During his 2022 congressional campaign, he compared reparations to compensation received by Japanese Americans and American Indians, arguing Black Americans deserve fair treatment. The legislation remains dead on arrival in the Republican-controlled House. Thanedar has also introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump and other administration figures despite opposition from House Democratic leadership, demonstrating his willingness to break from party strategy on multiple fronts.
