Senator FIRES BACK As Democrat Crashes Event

Progressive Rep. Greg Casar crashed Sen. John Cornyn’s charitable visit to Austin’s airport, turning a gesture to feed unpaid TSA workers into a heated confrontation over the month-long Department of Homeland Security shutdown that has left federal employees without paychecks.

Confrontation at Austin Airport

Cornyn arrived at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Monday to distribute Whataburger meals to TSA workers who have gone without pay for a month due to the DHS funding lapse. Casar, who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus and represents the Austin area, intercepted the event to blame Republicans for the shutdown. The accusation glossed over Casar’s own voting record against DHS funding bills. Cornyn fired back at the congressman, asking why Democrats refused to vote to pay federal workers.

When Casar proposed passing a bipartisan bill funding only the TSA, Cornyn rejected the approach as unacceptable. The Texas senator pointed to the bill’s exclusion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, agencies critical to national security following recent terrorist attacks on American soil. As Cornyn walked away, Casar delivered a parting shot, suggesting the senator should bring paychecks instead of burgers to struggling workers.

Senate Stalemate Over DHS Funding

The DHS shutdown began February 14 after Senate Democrats blocked funding legislation, demanding sweeping reforms to immigration enforcement agencies. Democratic requirements include tightening warrant procedures and prohibiting officers from wearing masks during operations. Republicans and the Trump administration agreed to deploy body cameras but rejected the mask and warrant provisions. Last week, Democrats forced a vote on funding DHS while excluding ICE and CBP entirely, but Republicans defeated the measure, insisting immigration enforcement agencies remain included in any funding package.

Political Stakes in Texas

The airport confrontation carries added weight as Cornyn faces the toughest political challenge of his career. The incumbent senator advanced to a May 26 runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton after neither secured a majority in the Republican primary. President Trump has teased a potential endorsement but has not yet weighed in on the race. Cornyn recently announced support for weakening the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster to fund DHS and pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voting. Austin’s airport has experienced delays, cancellations, and extended security lines as unpaid TSA workers express frustration over the funding impasse.
