White House TIGHTENS Asylum Rules Targets High Risk Nations

The Trump administration has rolled back its comprehensive asylum freeze four months after a deadly attack on National Guard members, shifting focus to target only applicants from 39 high-risk nations under current travel restrictions.

Policy Reversal Following National Security Crisis

US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced it has lifted the adjudicative hold for thoroughly screened asylum seekers from non-high-risk countries. The agency stated this change allows resources to concentrate on rigorous national security vetting for higher-risk cases. The original freeze affected all asylum applications immediately after Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal allegedly shot two National Guard troops in Washington, DC, last November. West Virginia Army National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom died in the attack, while Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe sustained critical injuries.

Immediate Response to Thanksgiving Attack

Federal immigration officials confirmed Lakanwal entered the United States in 2021 under humanitarian parole during the Afghanistan evacuation. Within days of the shooting, the Department of Homeland Security imposed dramatic restrictions on asylum applications and completely halted immigration processes for individuals from 19 nations classified as high-risk. USCIS simultaneously reduced the timeframe for valid work permits issued to asylum seekers and other foreign nationals seeking employment authorization in America.

Enhanced Vetting Systems Remain Active

The administration launched a specialized vetting center in Atlanta during December 2025 to upgrade migrant screening procedures. The facility assists federal officials in identifying terrorists, criminal aliens, and foreign nationals who present dangers to national security. President Trump’s expanded travel ban from December continues restricting entry from 39 countries, and the asylum freeze remains fully enforced for applicants from those nations. A USCIS spokesperson emphasized that maximum screening and vetting for all aliens continues unabated under presidential leadership.

Constitutional Security Framework

The December presidential proclamation stated the United States must exercise extreme vigilance during visa issuance and immigration processes to identify foreign nationals who intend to harm Americans or national interests before admission. The government must ensure admitted aliens do not threaten citizens, undermine American culture or government institutions, or support designated foreign terrorists. This scaled approach maintains constitutional safeguards while addressing legitimate security concerns raised by the National Guard attack that shocked the nation’s capital.
