Democrat DEFIES Party Then DUMPS Democratic Label

North Carolina State Representative Carla Cunningham officially left the Democratic Party after voting with Republicans to override Governor Josh Stein’s veto of the Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act, declaring she will serve people over party politics.

Breaking With Democrats on Immigration

Cunningham, who has represented the Democratic Party since her 2012 election to the 106th Congressional District, changed her voter registration to unaffiliated last week. The representative joined Republicans in July to override the Democratic governor’s veto on immigration enforcement legislation. She stood alone among Democrats willing to cross party lines on the measure, which passed the House 72-48 and the Senate 30-19. Cunningham stated in her official announcement that being an independent thinker does not align with party politics, and she refuses to compromise constituent needs for political agendas.

Controversial Floor Speech Sparks Backlash

During a July speech on the North Carolina House floor, Cunningham delivered remarks that drew immediate criticism from Democrats. She stated that all cultures are not equal and emphasized the need to establish new rules addressing current migration patterns. The representative said she would welcome immigrants who want to adapt to American culture and enter legally, but refused to prioritize other groups over American citizens. Cunningham, who is black, reported facing accusations of racism following her immigration vote. She confirmed that colleagues degraded her, called her racist, and said she was trash for voting with Republicans on the enforcement measure.

What This Means

Cunningham’s departure reflects growing tensions within the Democratic Party over immigration policy. Her vote appears driven by principle rather than political calculation, as Republicans held sufficient votes to override the veto without her support. The representative emphasized that she came to realize her priority is serving constituents rather than maintaining party loyalty. Her decision to become unaffiliated allows her to vote according to constituent interests without facing party discipline. This shift demonstrates how immigration enforcement has become a dividing issue even within traditionally Democratic constituencies, particularly when elected officials prioritize American citizens over illegal immigrants.
