House Democrats released a 55-page report accusing President Trump of hijacking America’s 250th birthday celebration through a shadowy organization called Freedom 250, alleging the group engaged in potential criminal fraud to enrich Trump allies while pushing an extreme partisan agenda using taxpayer dollars.
Democrats Expose Shadow Celebration Group
Representative Jared Huffman of California, ranking Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, led the months-long investigation into Freedom 250. The report titled “From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People out of their 250th Birthday” drew from whistleblower interviews, sworn Congressional testimony, and internal documents. Huffman told NPR that Trump personally directed operatives running Freedom 250, transforming what should have been a unifying national celebration into a vehicle for his personal interests.
Freedom 250 operates as a public-private partnership incorporated in October 2025 under the National Park Foundation. The group describes itself as the national, nonpartisan organization leading America’s 250th birthday celebration. However, Congress had already created America250 for this purpose back in 2016, raising questions about why Trump needed his own separate organization.
Allegations of Fraud and Self-Enrichment
The Democratic report accuses Freedom 250 of multiple potentially criminal activities. Investigators claim the group misled donors who believed they were supporting the Congressional America250 commission but actually sent money to Trump’s Freedom 250 instead. This deception could constitute wire fraud under federal law. The report also alleges Freedom 250 solicited foreign funds, sold access to the president, and awarded questionable contracts to Trump allies while funding events with an explicitly Christian and partisan slant.
Freedom 250 organized several high-profile summer events including a UFC fight outside the White House in June, a controversial state fair on the National Mall, and a July Fourth fireworks show opening with a Trump rally. Critics say these events present a sanitized version of American history while pushing sectarian religious content paid for with taxpayer money.
White House and Freedom 250 Deny Claims
Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez categorically denied all allegations, calling the report a partisan smear. She criticized Congressional members for spending countless hours fabricating reports instead of celebrating America’s milestone birthday. The White House referred comment requests to Freedom 250, though the organization insisted it does not speak for the White House. Democrats claim Trump created Freedom 250 after failing to pack the original America250 commission with his loyalists. The National Park Foundation board now includes Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita among other Trump allies overseeing the organization.
