President Donald Trump announced plans to renovate the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, promising to complete the project faster and cheaper than government estimates while making it more beautiful than ever before.
Presidential Project Gets Fast-Track Treatment
Trump took to Truth Social on Thursday, April 9, to reveal that he and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum are moving forward with fixing what he called the once beautiful reflecting pool. The 79-year-old president claimed the renovation would take a fraction of the time and cost originally estimated by government officials. Trump stated the renovated pool will be much more beautiful than when it was first built in the early 1920s.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool stands as the largest reflecting pool in Washington, D.C., stretching between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The pool last underwent renovation in 2010, closing for two years before reopening in 2012. Trump first announced his intention to remodel the iconic structure back in November, sharing a video highlighting green water in the pool and criticizing the previous administration’s maintenance.
Part of Broader White House Beautification Push
The reflecting pool renovation represents just one element of Trump’s extensive makeover of government buildings and grounds in the nation’s capital. In February, the president unveiled plans for an 89,000-square-foot East Wing expansion of the White House, featuring a ballroom, movie theater, and dedicated office space for First Lady Melania Trump and her staff.
Additional changes include paving over the Rose Garden for a new patio, redesigning the Palm Room and Lincoln Bedroom bathroom, and installing a Presidential Walk of Fame along the West Colonnade. White House spokesman Davis Ingle defended the projects, stating the president was making the White House beautiful and restoring its glory at no cost to taxpayers. The administration maintains these renovations demonstrate efficient government spending while preserving American landmarks for future generations.
