China’s Grip on Critical Defense Materials
REalloys CEO Lipi Sternheim warned that China’s dominance of rare earth supply chains gives Beijing dangerous leverage over American defense and technology manufacturers. The minerals are essential for producing powerful magnets used in F-35 fighter jets, submarines, missile-defense systems, and other critical military hardware. Sternheim told reporters the Trump-Xi meeting must prioritize keeping rare earths flowing to defense contractors for the next two to three years while domestic production capacity expands.
Sternheim emphasized the urgency facing American industries. The fact that rare earths dominate the summit agenda underscores their strategic importance to national security. Building independent supply chains will take years, not days, requiring sustained commitment beyond short-term diplomatic agreements.
Mixed Results From May Trade Agreement
The May agreement between Trump and Xi included Chinese commitments to address rare earth concerns and purchase at least seventeen billion dollars annually in American agricultural products. China also agreed to buy 200 Boeing aircraft and restore market access for American beef and poultry. Four months later, implementation remains uneven. Reuters reported progress toward finalizing the Boeing purchase, but agricultural imports are projected to fall short of agreed levels.
The summit agenda includes artificial intelligence development, potential tariff reductions on non-strategic goods, and ongoing rare earth export discussions. Broader disputes over advanced technology, intellectual property, and Taiwan remain unresolved. New trade and investment boards chartered under the May agreement are still being established.
America’s Superintelligence Lead
Trump declared American dominance in artificial intelligence during a United Nations address Tuesday, announcing government documents would begin referring to the technology as superintelligence. The president emphasized that whichever nation wins the superintelligence race will secure decisive strategic advantage. While Trump and Xi conduct meetings, First Lady Melania Trump will accompany Peng Liyuan to the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art. Thursday’s schedule includes a State Arrival Ceremony featuring 479 military personnel from all service branches on the South Lawn.
