Defense Chief UNLOADS On Lawmaker Over Iran Talk

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth delivered a forceful rebuke to a Democratic congressman on Wednesday, condemning defeatist rhetoric about the Iran conflict just two months after U.S. and Israeli forces launched joint military operations against the Islamic Republic.

Defense Secretary Confronts Lawmaker

During testimony before the House Armed Services Committee, Hegseth directly challenged Representative John Garamendi of California for characterizing the Iran conflict as a quagmire during a CNN appearance earlier that morning. Appearing alongside General Dan Caine, Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hegseth warned that negative congressional rhetoric posed a serious threat to military morale. The secretary drew sharp contrasts between the current operation and past conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hegseth told Garamendi that his generation served through genuine quagmires involving years of unclear missions and failed nation-building efforts that produced no results. The defense secretary accused the congressman of dishonoring American troops by applying such defeatist language to a two-month-old operation. Hegseth stated the biggest adversary facing U.S. forces consists of reckless and defeatist words from congressional Democrats and some Republicans who undermine military objectives through premature criticism.

Obama-Era Nuclear Deal Under Fire

The secretary also attacked the previous administration’s nuclear agreement with Iran, arguing it provided immediate financial benefits that Tehran used to fund proxy forces throughout the Middle East. Hegseth claimed the deal enabled Iran to support Hamas and Hezbollah while advancing its nuclear weapons program. He contrasted this approach with President Trump’s strategy, which he described as confronting adversaries determined to acquire nuclear capabilities and forcing them to negotiate complete abandonment of such programs.

Military Operations Continue

The joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran commenced in late February, representing a significant escalation in regional tensions. The hearing provided the first major congressional testimony on the operation’s progress and strategic objectives. Hegseth emphasized the administration’s commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons through decisive action rather than diplomatic concessions. The exchange highlighted growing partisan divisions over military engagement in the Middle East and appropriate congressional oversight of ongoing operations.
