Driver charged after plowing into 40 cyclists, killing one

A 76-year-old driver faces multiple felony charges after allegedly driving impaired into a group of cyclists in Wake County, North Carolina, killing one person and injuring at least a dozen others Saturday morning.

Details of the Incident

North Carolina State Highway Patrol reports that Donald Robert Morris-Jones of Apex was driving a black Infiniti westbound shortly after 9:30 a.m. when his vehicle crossed the center line on a Wake County road. The car struck a group of more than 40 cyclists traveling eastbound during their regular weekend ride. The impact proved catastrophic for the recreational cycling group.

Authorities identified the deceased victim as Patrick Allen Turner, 63, of Cary, North Carolina. Holly Springs Fire Chief LeRoy Smith reported that seven individuals sustained major injuries requiring hospital transport, while 15 others suffered minor injuries. State highway patrol officials estimated the total injury count at approximately one dozen people, though reports varied.

Driver Fled the Scene

Morris-Jones did not remain at the crash site following the collision. State highway patrol officials say the driver continued traveling for roughly half a mile before his vehicle crashed into a roadside ditch. Authorities arrested him at that location on numerous serious charges. The charges include felony death by vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle, felony hit-and-run involving serious injury or death, reckless driving, and driving while impaired.

Community Impact and Context

Witnesses at the scene confirmed the cyclists belonged to a group that regularly meets for weekend bike rides in the area. Wake County, located approximately 14 miles southwest of Raleigh, has become home to numerous recreational cycling groups in recent years. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety for cyclists and the devastating consequences of impaired driving.

The crash serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired drivers on American roads. North Carolina law enforcement continues to emphasize the importance of sober driving and respecting all road users, including cyclists who have the same rights to roadways as motorists. The multiple felony charges reflect the severity of the incident and the state’s commitment to holding impaired drivers accountable for their actions.
