Vice President JD Vance confirmed Tuesday that the Department of Justice is actively investigating Representative Ilhan Omar for possible immigration fraud, marking a significant escalation in allegations that have followed the Minnesota Democrat since her first congressional campaign in 2018.
Active Federal Investigation Underway
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Vance acknowledged the ongoing probe while emphasizing due process. The Vice President, who leads the administration’s anti-fraud efforts, stated the Justice Department would prosecute if evidence of criminal activity emerges. He noted that while circumstances appear suspicious, everyone deserves equal justice under the law. Vance had previously declared earlier this year that Omar definitely committed immigration fraud, a claim her chief of staff dismissed as a ridiculous lie.
The investigation centers on Omar’s marriage history, specifically her 2009 wedding to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen. Multiple reports over the past decade have identified Elmi as a possible sibling of the congresswoman. The couple married in a Christian ceremony in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, despite both being Muslim, according to Hennepin County records. They divorced in December 2017 after what Omar described as a brief relationship with frequent separations.
Complex Marriage Timeline Raises Questions
Omar’s marital history has fueled scrutiny for years. She first wed Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in an Islamic ceremony in 2002, though the pair did not legally marry until January 2018. During the intervening years, they had three children together while Omar was legally married to Elmi. A deleted Instagram photo showed Elmi holding the couple’s third child with a caption referring to nieces, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
The allegations first surfaced on a Somali politics discussion board before being deleted. Minneapolis Somali community leader Abdihakim Osman later told media outlets he knew both Omar and Elmi growing up in Minnesota. Osman claimed Omar introduced Elmi as her brother from London to community members, noting he was seeking immigration papers such as a green card.
Political And Legal Implications
The federal investigation carries serious potential consequences for the Squad member. Immigration fraud can result in denaturalization, criminal charges, and removal from the United States. For a sitting member of Congress, such an investigation represents unprecedented territory. Omar has rarely addressed the allegations publicly, maintaining her second marriage was legitimate despite the unusual circumstances and lack of children from that union. The Justice Department has not provided a timeline for concluding its investigation or indicated what specific evidence prompted the probe.
