ICE Mom WALKS Free — Judge Steps In

A federal judge ordered the release of a mother detained by immigration agents while dropping her daughter at a Baltimore elementary school, marking a significant development in a case that sparked controversy over enforcement actions on school grounds.

Court Orders Immediate Release

Adriana Gavilan Sanchez walked free from the Caroline Detention Facility in Virginia after a judge mandated her release before 5 p.m. on July 15. The Mexican national, who lacks legal immigration status, no longer appears in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement online detainee locator system, according to reports from The Baltimore Banner. Her partner, Jesus Acevedo Sanchez, remains in custody and faces a scheduled court appearance on July 23. Both parents are U.S. citizens’ children.

Arrest Details Under Scrutiny

ICE agents detained the couple on June 11 outside Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School during morning drop-off. The Department of Homeland Security initially claimed Acevedo Sanchez violently resisted arrest, used his vehicle to evade law enforcement, and dragged an ICE officer during the incident. Officials also alleged a second undocumented immigrant in the vehicle assaulted officers during the confrontation.

Recent court filings tell a different story. ICE documents submitted to the court made no mention of any assault, instead stating officers encountered only minimal physical resistance when ordering Gavilan Sanchez from the vehicle. The discrepancy between DHS public statements and official court documents raises questions about the characterization of events that morning outside the school.

School District Pushes Back

ICE claimed coordination with Baltimore City Public School System officials prior to the arrests. School district leadership flatly denied those claims, stating no such coordination occurred. District officials emphasized that ICE previously acknowledged schools should remain focused on learning and that enforcement actions should not occur on school campuses. The statement welcomed ICE’s commitment to avoiding school-based enforcement and expressed expectations that future actions would consistently reflect that policy.

What This Means

The federal government continues pursuing deportation proceedings against both parents despite their children’s American citizenship. The judge’s decision to release Gavilan Sanchez does not end her immigration case but allows her to remain with her daughters while proceedings continue. The case highlights ongoing tensions between immigration enforcement priorities and community concerns about enforcement tactics, particularly actions affecting families with citizen children at sensitive locations like schools.
