Mike Johnson DEFENDS Trump Economic Turnaround

House Speaker Mike Johnson called on Americans to remain patient as the Trump administration works to reverse economic conditions inherited from the previous presidency, stating that economic turnarounds cannot happen overnight.

Economic Progress Takes Time

Speaking ahead of President Trump’s night address, Johnson defended the administration’s economic record while acknowledging work remains. The Louisiana Republican described the economy under the Biden administration as a complete disaster that requires sustained effort to fix. Johnson emphasized that reversing negative economic trends demands time and consistent policy implementation rather than immediate results. Consumer prices rose 2.4 percent in the year ending January, down from the 9.1 percent peak in mid-2022, though inflation has remained around 3 percent since mid-2024.

Johnson anticipated the president would highlight economic achievements during his speech, including what he called exciting accomplishments since returning to office last year. The Speaker disputed recent trade deficit figures showing the U.S. imported $1.24 trillion more goods than it exported in 2025, marking the widest trade deficit on record. He maintained that Trump’s trade policy approach has benefited the nation despite data showing manufacturing employment has declined slightly over the past year.

Iran Tensions and Immigration Enforcement

On foreign policy matters, Johnson said President Trump prioritizes diplomatic solutions with Iran while not ruling out military options. The Speaker characterized Iran as the primary agitator in the Middle East and a sponsor of terrorist organizations worldwide. He stated that eliminating the Iranian regime would benefit both America and global stability. Johnson noted he does not expect U.S. ground forces to deploy in the region.

Addressing immigration concerns, Johnson defended enforcement efforts led by Tom Homan, particularly operations in Minneapolis. He acknowledged public perception that some actions appeared overzealous, but maintained the administration’s focus remained on removing dangerous criminal immigrants from American communities.

Technology and Future Outlook

Johnson expressed confidence in America’s ability to navigate artificial intelligence disruptions, urging citizens not to panic about technological advances. The Speaker said lawmakers remain vigilant and sober-minded about AI developments while maintaining faith in American innovation to stay ahead of international competitors like China. He reiterated that patience remains essential as the administration continues implementing its economic agenda, stating the country has reversed course from the previous four years but has not yet reached the desired goals.
