Trump STRIKES $1B Deal To Halt Wind Projects

The Trump administration struck a $1 billion deal with French energy giant TotalEnergies to abandon offshore wind projects off the North Carolina and New York coasts, redirecting the funds toward fossil fuel development in what critics label a taxpayer-funded scheme to kill renewable energy.

The Billion Dollar Agreement

The Department of the Interior announced Monday that TotalEnergies agreed to surrender two offshore wind leases in exchange for a full refund of lease payments. The French company committed to investing the refunded money in a Texas liquefied natural gas plant and oil and gas operations instead. TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne stated offshore wind development is no longer in America’s interest, calling fossil fuels a more efficient capital use.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum defended the arrangement, claiming it would produce dependable, affordable power while lowering monthly bills for Americans. The administration maintained that this innovative agreement ends ideological subsidies benefiting what they called the unreliable and costly offshore wind industry. TotalEnergies will receive reimbursement after completing the Texas fossil fuel investments, according to the Department of the Interior.

Political Firestorm Erupts

Democratic governors condemned the deal as government overreach and fiscal waste. New York Governor Kathy Hochul accused Trump of running a pay-not-to-play scheme, calling it an outrageous abuse of taxpayer dollars. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein labeled it a terrible deal, noting the state possesses offshore wind potential to power millions of homes with American-made renewable energy.

Environmental organizations blasted the arrangement as a billion-dollar bribe to strangle clean energy. Evergreen Action executive director Lena Moffitt stated that Trump found an alternative method to block offshore wind after losing repeatedly in federal court. The administration previously halted construction on five major East Coast wind projects, citing national security concerns, but federal judges overturned those orders, allowing construction to resume.

Energy Policy Reversal

The agreement represents Trump’s broader second-term strategy favoring fossil fuels over renewable energy. The president claims this approach will reduce family costs, increase energy reliability, and maintain American leadership in artificial intelligence development. The deal contrasts sharply with the Biden administration’s efforts to expand offshore wind as a climate solution. China currently leads global offshore wind installations, while the United States now pays companies to abandon similar projects on American shores.
