Three American states scheduled executions within a single 24-hour period this week, marking an unusual surge in capital punishment that experts say reflects the highest execution rate in over a decade. Georgia, Texas, and Alabama moved forward with death warrants as the nation approaches 25 executions in 2026, though a last-minute judicial stay halted one proceeding.
The 24-Hour Window
Georgia planned to execute Stacey Humphreys, 53, on Wednesday for the 2003 murders of real estate agents Lori Brown, 21, and Cindy Williams, 33. A Cobb County judge issued a stay late Tuesday, blocking the execution unless higher courts intervene. Texas scheduled LeJames Norman, 40, for execution Wednesday evening for a 2005 triple murder during a home invasion robbery. Alabama set Thursday to execute Jeffery Lee, 50, for a double murder committed during a 1998 pawn shop holdup.
Robin Maher, Executive Director of the Death Penalty Information Center, confirmed the rarity of such clustering. The organization tracks capital punishment nationwide and noted September 2026 includes eight scheduled executions. The last time seven or more executions occurred in a single month was October 2025, which recorded seven. Before that, the nation had not seen such numbers since 2010.
Florida Drives National Numbers
Florida dominates execution statistics under Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who has signed death warrants at an accelerated pace. The state executed 19 inmates in 2025, representing more than 40 percent of all American executions that year. Florida has carried out 15 executions in 2026, accounting for 60 percent of the national total. Across both years, Florida represents 47 percent of all executions nationwide.
Texas, historically the execution leader, performed eight executions across 2025 and 2026 combined. Alabama conducted six executions during the same period, while South Carolina carried out five, all in 2025. The 2025 total of 47 executions marked the highest annual count since 2009, driven primarily by Florida’s unprecedented pace.
Pattern of Concentrated Executions
August witnessed three states execute inmates on the same day. Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Alabama conducted lethal injections on August 13, the first time three states executed prisoners simultaneously since January 7, 2010. Florida performed two executions in one day on July 28, its first double execution in decades. Maher emphasized states do not coordinate these schedules, calling the overlap coincidental rather than planned.
The Death Penalty Information Center projects 2026 will not match 2025’s execution numbers despite 14 additional executions scheduled for the remaining months. Courts may issue additional stays or states could schedule new warrants, but experts anticipate totals falling below last year’s 15-year high.
