Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dedicated a statue honoring Juan Ponce de Leon at the state capitol Friday, recognizing the Spanish explorer who named Florida over 500 years ago and launched European exploration of the region in 1513.

Historic Monument Installed at Capitol

The bronze statue commemorates Ponce de Leon’s arrival on Florida’s shores in March 1513, when he became the first documented European to explore the territory. The explorer christened the land “The Flowering” after observing its lush vegetation and natural beauty during his expedition along the Atlantic coastline. The monument stands as part of Florida’s effort to preserve its pre-American founding heritage stretching back more than five centuries.

DeSantis emphasized that Florida’s recorded history began long before American statehood or independence, noting the explorer’s instrumental role in shaping the region. The governor highlighted how Ponce de Leon’s expedition marked the beginning of written documentation about the territory that would eventually become the 27th state.

Explorer’s Legacy and Tragic End

Ponce de Leon navigated from the Atlantic coastline southward to the Florida Keys during his initial 1513 voyage, mapping previously uncharted territory for European powers. His exploration opened Florida to Spanish influence that would dominate the region for centuries. However, his second expedition in 1521 ended in tragedy when native Calusa inhabitants wounded him in combat, leading to his death shortly after.

Bryan Griffin, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA, stated the explorer played an instrumental role in state history by bestowing the name that endures today. Griffin called the statue a fitting tribute to individuals who shaped Florida’s fascinating historical narrative, providing residents and tourists a lasting monument to appreciate.

Part of Broader Heritage Initiative

The statue unveiling represents one component of DeSantis’s America250FL celebration honoring Florida’s role in American history. Last year, the governor announced plans to install statues of Founding Fathers in Florida counties bearing their names across the state. The initiative aims to highlight Florida’s significance in the nation’s development while educating citizens about the state’s unique five-century legacy that predates the United States itself. Officials describe the monument as representing Florida’s courage, resolve, and enduring spirit throughout generations.
