President Donald Trump is deploying the full weight of his political machine to unseat Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie in what has become the most expensive House primary in American history, with over $32 million in advertising spending flooding the 4th Congressional District race.
Trump Recruits Navy SEAL to Challenge Massie
Trump personally recruited Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL and fifth-generation farmer, to challenge Massie after months of searching for a candidate. The president publicly endorsed Gallrein on Truth Social last October, calling him a patriot with a big, beautiful brain. At a March campaign event in Massie’s district, Trump told supporters he needed someone with a warm body to defeat the eight-term congressman. Gallrein has embraced his role as Trump’s chosen candidate, telling voters he stands 100 percent behind the president’s agenda while declining multiple debate requests from Massie.
Breaking Points That Sparked Trump’s Fury
The feud between Trump and Massie stretches back to 2020 when Massie blocked swift passage of a COVID relief bill, prompting Trump to call him a third-rate grandstander and demand his removal from the Republican Party. The relationship deteriorated further when Massie became one of only two House Republicans to vote against Trump’s signature tax and spending package, citing national debt concerns. The MIT-trained engineer, who wears a homemade debt clock pin on his lapel, said the final breaking point came when he joined a bipartisan effort to force release of all Jeffrey Epstein files. Massie also sponsored war powers resolutions against Trump’s Iran strikes.
Pattern of Primary Purges Continues
The Kentucky race represents Trump’s latest effort to eliminate Republican critics within his own party. Last week, Trump successfully ousted Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy by backing primary challenger Julia Letlow. Earlier this month in Indiana, Trump helped defeat GOP state lawmakers who opposed his redistricting plans. Trump-aligned groups and pro-Israel organizations have dominated advertising in the Massie race, pouring millions into negative campaigns. Massie told reporters that voters face a simple choice between supporting him or opposing him, acknowledging he votes with the party 90 percent of the time but breaks ranks when he believes his constituents are better served by a different position.
