CONVICTED: Coach SENTENCED 90 Years

A federal judge delivered a maximum 90-year prison sentence to a former youth gymnastics coach who secretly recorded young girls undressing in a Mississippi gym bathroom, effectively ending the career of a predator who operated unchecked despite multiple warnings to national oversight organizations.

Maximum Sentence for Hidden Camera Operation

U.S. District Judge Kristi Johnson handed down the harshest penalty available to Sean Gardner, 39, ordering three consecutive 30-year terms on federal child pornography production charges. Gardner admitted to installing a concealed camera in the bathroom at a Purvis, Mississippi gymnastics facility between December 2017 and April 2018. Federal investigators recovered approximately 50 videos and 400 photographs from his computers, including close-up footage of at least 10 minors in various states of undress. One video allegedly shows Gardner himself adjusting the hidden device.

The evidence emerged during a separate investigation into sexual abuse allegations against Gardner from his time coaching at Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa. The Iowa facility, founded by prominent Olympic coach Liang Chow, employed Gardner starting in 2018 despite earlier concerns raised about his conduct. Gardner has not faced charges related to the Iowa allegations, with authorities waiting for the federal case to conclude before determining next steps.

Warnings Ignored by National Oversight Bodies

Multiple civil lawsuits now allege that USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Center for SafeSport received reports about Gardner’s inappropriate behavior as early as 2017 but failed to remove him from coaching positions. The mother of a young Mississippi gymnast sent an email warning to USA Gymnastics about her concerns. Separately, Gardner’s Mississippi supervisor claimed she alerted USA Gymnastics about his grooming behavior in January 2018. Despite these red flags, Gardner transitioned to the Iowa facility months later, gaining access to new victims.

Former students describe a pattern of normalized inappropriate contact. Liberty Raines, who trained under Gardner at age 11, recalled a ritual where he would kiss each girl on the forehead and pat their buttocks after nearly every practice. Another gymnast, Finley Weldon, told investigators Gardner made inappropriate jokes about sex lives and touched her improperly during stretching and spotting exercises. SafeSport eventually suspended Gardner in 2022 after receiving abuse allegations from a Chow’s gymnast, prompting his termination. The organization later discovered that Chow and other coaches knew of misconduct allegations but failed to file required reports.

Systemic Failure in Youth Sports Protection

This case reveals catastrophic breakdowns in the systems designed to protect young athletes from predatory coaches. Gardner operated across multiple states and facilities for years despite documented concerns reaching the highest levels of gymnastics oversight. The pattern mirrors previous scandals in youth sports where institutional inertia and reputation protection superseded child safety. The 90-year sentence ensures Gardner will likely die in prison, but questions remain about accountability for those who enabled his continued access to vulnerable children despite clear warning signs.
