The governor also banned purchases of tattoos, spa services, tanning beds, and fortune-telling services using welfare benefits.

The restrictions extend to tobacco products, vaping supplies, drugs, intoxicants, and adult material. DeSantis emphasized that Temporary Cash Assistance exists to help eligible families pay for basic necessities including food, clothing, housing, utilities, household goods, and personal care items. The average Florida household receiving these benefits collects approximately 250 dollars monthly.

State Officials Defend Program Changes

Florida Department of Children and Families Interim Secretary Kate Williams defended the modifications as commonsense reforms. She stated that Temporary Cash Assistance provides families with flexibility during difficult times, and the new restrictions preserve that flexibility while strengthening program integrity. The governor’s office emphasized that TANF funds also support the Relative Caregiver Program, which currently assists relatives caring for more than 4,000 children statewide.
